Purchase, NY - The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra with featured pianist Valentina Lisitsa performs in The Concert Hall at The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $72.50, $62.50, $52.50 and $42.50.
The program includes Karlowicz’s Serenade, op. 2; Liszt’s Piano Concerto no. 1, E-flat Major; and Brahms’ Symphony no. 2, op. 73 in D Major.
Founded in 1901, the Warsaw Philharmonic is Poland’s leading musical ensemble. Its first concert featured as soloist the world-famous pianist, composer and future statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The program of this historic concert included Paderewski's Piano Concerto in A minor and works by other Polish composers: Chopin, Moniuszko, Noskowski, Stojowski and Żeleński.
The orchestra made Warsaw a major European center of music, attracting such conductors and soloists over the years as Edward Grieg, Arthur Honegger, Otto Klemperer, Yehudi Menuhin, Sergei Prokofiev, Sergei Rachmaninov, Maurice Ravel, Artur Rodzinski, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Claudio Arrau, Vladimir Horowitz, Wilhelm Kempff, Arthur Rubinstein and Isaac Stern.
Today, under the direction of Maestro Antoni Witt, the Philharmonic regularly participates in the International F. Chopin Piano Competitions and the Warsaw Autumn Festival.
The Orchestras Series at The Performing Arts Center continues with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (Mar. 15) and the National Philharmonic of Russia (Apr. 17).
