Ossining, NY - Westchester Library System (WLS) recently welcomed librarians, storytellers, publishers, and authors to their ninth Anne Izard Storytellers’ Choice Awards on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Ossining Public Library
The thirteen winners included titles by noted storytellers and accomplished writers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
This year’s special guests were 2009 recipients Judy Freeman, Peninnah Schram, and Andrea Davis Pinkney. In a tribute to the late Kate McClelland, beloved children’s librarian, celebrated storyteller Carol Birch captivated audience members with a mesmerizing retelling of Luba: the Angel of Bergen-Belsen by Michelle McCann and Luba Tryszynska-Frederick.
The Anne Izard Storytellers’ Choice Award was established in 1990 to honor Anne Izard, noted storyteller, librarian, and former Children's Services Consultant in Westchester County. The award spotlights distinguished titles in the field of storytelling, published for children and adults, with a goal of bringing the genre’s many riches to even wider audiences.
The thirteen award recipients included: The Girl Who Helped Thunder and Other Native American Folktales by James and Joseph Bruchac (Sterling), Good Enough to Eat by Brock Cole (FSG), One is a Feast for a Mouse: A Thanksgiving Tale by Judy Cox (Holiday House), Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale by Carmen Agra Deedy (Peachtree), A Taste of Colored Water by Matt Faulkner (S&S), Once Upon a Time: Using Storytelling, Creative Drama and Reader’s Theater with Children in Grades Pre K-6 by Judy Freeman (Libraries Unlimited), Dance, Nana, Dance/Baila, Nana, Baila: Cuban Folktales in English and Spanish by Joe Hayes (Cinco Puntos Press), That Book Woman by Heather Henson (Atheneumn), Way Up and Over Everything by Alice McGill (Houghton), Doctor All-Knowing: A Folk Tale from the Brothers Grimm by Doris Orgel (Atheneumn), Boycott Blues: How Rosa Parks Inspired a Nation by Andrea Davis Pinkney (Greenwillow), The Bearskinner: A Tale of the Brothers Grimm by Laura Amy Schlitz (Candlewick), and The Hungry Clothes and Other Jewish Folktales by Peninnah Schram (Sterling).
