Pelham, NY - The Pelham Art Center presents The Golden Age of American Sheet Music July 8 - August 15, 2008 with an opening reception and all age Art Workshop Tuesday, July 8, 6:30-8:00pm.
This event is free and open to the public.
Sheet music printed in New York's Tin Pan Alley from the 1920s-1940s represents a golden period of American popular music, a time before television became the nation's premier entertainment and when pianos could be found in many household parlors and school classrooms. Competition for sales was robust among publishers, and the artistry displayed on the covers prevailed as one of the top forms of commercial art of the time, though many of the artists remain unknown.
Two dozen pieces of sheet music, with cover art moitfs ranging from Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Cartoon, and Country and Western graphics and illustrations, include popular tunes such as Irving Berlin’s “Some Sunny Day,” Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s “Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered,” as well as novelty tunes like “Cow Cow Boogie.”
Versatile and highly productive sheet music illustrators in the exhibit include Albert Barbelle, Andre Detakacs, Edward Pfeiffer, Frederick Manning, William and Frederick Starmer, and others. On loan from Dr. Albert Andresen, a collector, and Teri Landi, a music historian and record producer.

So everyone could enjoy them.
The golden age of sheet music is sitting next to my piano....in tatters, left behind by generations of my grandmas and great grandmas...I treasure them.
Wish I could see your exhibit!
thanks
