The exhibition of prints organized by The New York Society of Etchers was curated by Marilyn Kushner, former curator of prints and drawings at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The traveling show was first presented in 2006 at The National Arts Club in New York City. Originally, it included more than thirty activist and socially engaging works.

Building upon the critical success of this show, the format was expanded to include additional prints that could be accommodated by larger gallery spaces and was presented at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill, New York during the summer of 2007.

Printmakers participating in the exhibition include Linda Adato, Marshall Arisman, Kristine Bouyoucos, Ann Chernow, Zev Deans, Stephen A. Fredericks, Danny Hauben, Art Hazelwood, Frances Jetter, Denise Kasof, Mattias Kerns, Brian Knoerzer, Rosalee Isaly, Sue Leopard, Bill Maxwell, Diane Miller, Josh McPhee, Louis Netter, Joan O’Connor, Rick Pantell, Sarah Sears, Bruce Waldman, Barbara Wilson, Barbara Wilson, and Bruce Waldman.

Following the extended tour, the exhibition will travel to Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago in the fall of 2008. Additionally in the fall of 2008, The New York Society of Etchers will present a final recast format of the exhibition to be known as The Art of Democracy at The National Arts Club. The Art of Democracy will be part of a national coalition of exhibitions led by organizers Art Hazelwood in San Francisco, California and Stephen A. Fredericks of the New York Society of Etchers in New York City.

The Art of Democracy coalition effort will include prints and a promotional poster exchange between all of the participating artist printmaking groups.  Interested artists and print workshops and exhibiting societies should contact This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .
