White Plains, NY - Know any budding teen filmmakers eager to beat out the competition and take first place in the “Future Filmmakers” division of the Westchester Film Festival? Now is the time to get them busy – filming and editing as well as enlisting the support of their high school. The winner will get $1,000 plus a professional high-definition video package for their school.
The Future Filmmakers line-up, to be screened March 27 and 28, will be at a new (and hopefully permanent) venue this year: the Pelham Picture House. Last year’s event at National Amusement’s Cinema 15 in White Plains was a resounding success – with 22 submissions from 15 high schools. Organizers hope to double the number of entries this time around.
The county’s Film Office sent letters to every high school in the county, inviting them to submit their students’ films. Any student in grades 9-12 can participate as long as the entry is submitted through the sponsorship of an accredited high school (public or private). Each school can submit up to four entries -- each running 10 minutes or less -- and it’s up to them to decide which ones make the cut.
Stevens noted that many schools have a program aimed at film and video instruction for students and have expressed interest in gathering and submitting their best work.
Second and third place winters will be given $500 cash and their high school will be given $500 to put towards film equipment of their choice. Cash prizes are being donated by the Matthew S. Hisiger Film Foundation.
Entries must be narratives or documentaries (no music videos). The submission deadline is Feb. 9, 2009. For more information, call the film office at (914) 995-2917.
