Purchase, NY - Harlan Jacobson’s Talk Cinema – a series featuring sneak previews of notable independent and foreign films – returns at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College.
Tickets to the screenings, followed by audience discussions (often with the artists involved), are $22.50 (includes parking).
Jacobson, former film critic for Variety and editor at Film Comment, says he prefers that filmgoers not be told the names of the film they will see – or the guest speakers – until the day of the screening. “We think that’s part of the fun – seeing a film the way the critics do, festival style, without preconceived notions,” he says. The Center has set up a special “movie line” for those who would like advance information about the film – 914-251-6165 – accessible one day before the screening.
Jacobson scours film festivals at Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca and other places to find the best of new cinema. In recent years, audiences of Jacobson’s Talk Cinema series have previewed such wide-ranging films as Borat!, Sideways, Brokeback Mountain, Bend It Like Beckham, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Super Size Me and Antwone Fisher. Filmmakers who have appeared include Richard Eyre (Iris), Stanley Tucci (Joe Gould’s Secret), John Turturro (Illuminated), John Sayles (Sunshine State) and Paul Schrader (Auto Focus).
All screenings are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Upcoming dates are Oct. 14, Nov. 18, Dec. 2, Dec. 16, Jan. 20, Feb. 10, Mar. 10, Apr. 28 and May 12.
