Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsKatonah, NY - Shades of Jazz returns for its fourth summer to the Katonah Museum of Art’s Sculpture Garden, beginning June 4.

Curated by legendary guitarist John Scofield, the three-part series will once again feature sensations in the international jazz scene. The SOJ concerts all begin at 6:30pm and include complimentary wine and beer; attendees traditionally bring picnic dinners, lawn chairs and blankets.  $10 members, $20 non-members.   Shades of Jazz is made possible by major support from the Blue Note jazz club and sponsorship from Willy Nick’s Restaurant & Bar and Jonathan F.P. Rose. 134 Jay Street, Katonah.  914-232-9555. www.katonahmuseum.org

Shades of Jazz performances last approximately 90 minutes, ending in a jam session with John Scofield, whose revolutionary new CD, Piety Street, was released this spring.  This critically-acclaimed album fuses the roots of jazz, blues, gospel and rock in inventive, unexpected and unprecedented ways. “This gospel blues album further demonstrates how John has executed similar fusions, in altogether different contexts, throughout his extensive 36-album career,” says allaboutjazz.com

Dates and SOJ gigs are as follow:

Thursday, June 4 --  sensational  pounding with drummer Matt Wilson
Along with his quartet, Wilson has received rave reviews such as:  “One of the best working bands in New York City!” – The New York Times, and “Matt Wilson has emerged as one of the most accomplished –if not the most accomplished—inside/outside drummer of the 21st century” -- Jazz Weekly

Wednesday, July 29 – out-of-this world groove with the inner leaves of the band Lettuce
There is really only one way to describe this performance:  Prepare yourselves for the fun and energy of Lettuce.  Guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Adam Deitch and friends team up with Scofield to play what has once been described as “slammin’ funk.”

Wednesday, August 12 – world famous pianist Dena DeRose
It's no small accomplishment to be thought of as "the most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn," but that's exactly how Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described Dena DeRose.  She concludes the 2009 Shades of Jazz series with her trio.
