 Purchase, NY - Award winning environmentalist and author Verlyn Klinkenborg will deliver the 2008 Royal and Shirley Durst Lecture on October 21 at 7 PM in the Purchase College Performing Arts Center.
Klinkenborg is a writer and New York Times columnist. He has been a member of the New York Times editorial board since 1997 and has wide ranging interests and a keen fascination for the deep and profound links between the human and natural world. A resident of rural New York, he will offer a broad literary perspective on contemporary environmental conditions.
Agriculture, environment, and culture are favorite topics and he is author of several books including The Last Fine Time and The Rural Life. His book Timothy, or Notes of an Abject Reptile, tells the story of 18th century English curate and naturalist Gilbert White’s turtle, and is told from the turtle’s point of view. Klinkenborg’s column, “Rural Life”, appears regularly on the editorial page of the New York Times. He has also contributed to numerous national magazines including the New Yorker, New Republic, Harper’s, Gourmet, and Martha Stewart Living.
A Native of Colorado he was raised in Iowa and California. A Pomona College graduate, he received his Ph. D from Princeton University.
He has taught literature and creative writing at Fordham University, St. Olaf College, Bennington College and Harvard University. He is recipient of the 1991 Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Writer’s Award and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. His talk encompasses the Purchase College theme for the coming year “Environment is Everything: Creating Communities, Changing Climates.”
