Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Premieres New Dance Piece At Purchase College

Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPurchase, NY - Ronald K. Brown/Evidence – a leading modern dance company that blends African, modern, ballet and hip-hop dance styles – performs at The Performing Arts Center Purchase College on Friday, Nov. 16th and Saturday, Nov. 17th at 8 p.m.

Tickets to each show (including audience discussion with the company after each performance) are $45, $35 and $25.

Praised as one of the most profound choreographers of his modern dance generation, Brown is a “kinetic storyteller” who often uses the African American experience as his palette for creating dance works.

Friday’s program features the New York premiere of One Shot, a tribute to the work and legacy of noted documentary photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris.  Harris was celebrated for documenting African-American life, capturing the universal connection between community life, family, hope, dignity and celebration.  The evening will include an exhibition of 31 photographs created from Harris's negatives – showing historic and daily events of Pittsburgh’s African-American community between 1936 and 1975.

Saturday’s program includes three pieces:  Come ye, set to music by blues great Nina Simone and Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti; Upside Down, which explores the theme of impermanence; and High Life, which noted dance critic Anna Kisselgoff called "a brilliant essay on migration, focusing on images of Southern blacks moving to the North, but also hinting at corresponding journeys from village to city in Africa."

The performance by Ronald K. Brown/Evidence is part of this season’s Africa and the African Diaspora Series, a cross-campus programming initiative at Purchase College that explores traditions, revolutions and innovations within this rich culture.

The Dance Series continues with Urban Bush Women/Compagnie Jant-Bi on Jan. 25th and 26th (also part of the African Diaspora Series) and Grupo Corpo on Apr. 4th and 5th.

For more information, and to buy tickets, contact The Performing Arts Center ticket office (914-251-6200) or log onto The Center’s website at http://www.artscenter.org.  MasterCard is the preferred card of The Performing Arts Center.

The tour of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence is made possible by a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program. The appearance is funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  Additional funding is provided by The Ford Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.

The Center's 30th season is made possible, in part, by the Basic Program Support Grant of the Westchester Arts Council with funds from Westchester County Government.

Purchase College is located 28 miles northeast of New York City at the Connecticut border.  The college, part of the State University of New York, is a major institution of public higher education encompassing the liberal arts and sciences, professional training in the performing and visual arts, continuing education, The Neuberger Museum of Art, and The Performing Arts Center.
