Renowned Organist To Play Mozart Sonatas

Westchester Entertainment NewsMt. Kisco, NY - On November 22, 2008, at 8:00pm, renowned performer and conductor Mary Jane Newman, will bring the works of Mozart and Handel to life on the "Water Organ", the New York area’s pre-eminent new pipe organ.

Accompanied by Musica Antiqua, the premier antique instrument string ensemble, Ms. Newman will perform some of Mozart’s greatest organ works, the Church Sonatas, as well as Handel’s Concertos in D flat and G minor.

“I was awe inspired by the organ itself.  The tone of it, the magnificence of the sound,” says Bernard Foster of Chappaqua, one of the many enthusiastic audience members attending the sold-out  “Water Organ” Inaugural Concert.  Mr. Anthony Newman, who performed the concert, says, “It is not only the finest instrument in the area, but it is in the same league as New York City's finest organs.”

According to Ms. Newman, because of the design of the newly installed, Rudolf von Beckerath “Water Organ”, the instrument can be registered to sound very much like an instrument that Mozart might have played.

“I will find it interesting to play Mozart on this organ and from an historical perspective, I think it will be enlightening to hear,” says Ms. Newman,   “It’s like hearing Bach on the harpsichord.  No matter how well you know the music, it changes the way you hear it and I think that hearing Mozart on this organ, in this context, will change not just the way you hear Mozart organ music, but the way you understand Mozart.”

Ms. Newman began her professional career as organist and choirmaster of The English Church in Paris at age 16.  She made her debut as a harpsichord soloist at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and has since performed on organ, piano, and harpsichord throughout Europe and North America. Much sought after as a conductor, she has lead orchestras and choral groups in such varied venues as Prague, Cracow, Paris, Mexico City and Tel Aviv.

Rev. Molly Blythe Teichert, Sr. Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco, says, “The ‘Water Organ’ is just an amazing gift, and one that we are so happy to share with the community. Our vision is that this organ flow with life from the congregation out into the world as a source of music and healing.”

The concert, which will be followed by a gala reception at the church, is the second of the season.  Additional scheduled concerts include Randall Atcheson on March 8, 2009, and performances by the finalists of the national von Beckerath Young Organist Competition on April 25, 2009. Ticket prices are $40, or $25 for seniors and students.  For further information about tickets, please email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it , and include "organ concerts information" in the subject line.
