Purchase Symphony Salutes Haydn's 200th Anniversary

Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPurchase, NY - The Purchase Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro Michael Adelson, will commemorate the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death by performing  two Haydn Symphonies and a work by Koppel on November 20 at The Purchase College Performing Arts Center.

The concert is at 8 PM.  Tickets are $20.  Box Office is 914-251-6200.

Purchase College is located at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY.

Guest artists are Ching-Ping Wang, vibraphone and Phillip Gallo, marimba, winners of the Conservatory Concerto Competition at Purchase College.  They will perform Koppel’s Toccata for Vibraphone, Marimba, and Orchestra.

The concert theme is “The Radical Wig” a reference to Haydn who was considered a musical radical in his day and the inventor of the symphony as we know it. The orchestra will perform Haydn’s Symphony no. 39 in g minor and Haydn’s Symphony no. 103 in E-flat major “Drumroll.”

Maestro Adelson has extensive experience, having conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and many other ensembles in Europe and America.  He is also a composer, writer and educator who is on the conducting staff of the New York Philharmonic. He has also conducted opera productions in Scandinavia.   He is deeply committed to music of our timed, having worked with composers such as Pierre Boulez, Bernard Rands, Harrison Birtwistle, Magnus Lindberg and others.

He has written and conducted young people’s concerts with the New York, Helsinki and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras.  He has written and lectured widely on topics as diverse as the links between mathematics and music, the divide between science and religion, critical thinking, great historical cities as centers of culture, and twentieth-century art history. He is currently writing a book for non-musicians on the nature and art of conducting.

Orchestra performance of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, a collaboration with the Purchase Dance Corps’ fully staged production.  Over 250 area children participate along with dancers from the Conservatory of Dance and principal dancers Julie Diana and Zachary Hench from the Pennsylvania Ballet.  Box Office 914-251-6200.
