Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPurchase, NY - The Purchase Repertory Theatre presents two plays as part of the “New Plays Repertory” series – Marisol by Jose Rivera and Book of Days by Lanford Wilson.

Performances of Marisol are December 9, 11, and 13 at 8 PM.

Performances of Book of Days are December 10 and 12 at 8 PM and December 13 at 2 PM.

All shows are in the Purchase College Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and non-Purchase students, and can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 914-251-6200 or online at www.artscenter.org.

Purchase College, State University of New York, is located at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, N.Y.

In Marisol, a war among angels in Heaven turns New York City into an apocalyptic nightmare in this Obie Award-winning drama. By turns darkly comic and truly shocking, Rivera’s poetic fantasy is considered one of the best American plays in the style of magic realism.

Book of Days explores the impact a single death can have on a community. When the owner of a Missouri cheese factory dies, the plant’s bookkeeper (and star of the local community theatre) suspects foul play. The following investigation tears the town apart and exposes truths no one wants to face. More than a murder mystery, this 1999 play explores religion, politics, business, and theatre in America.

The Purchase Repertory Theatre features students from the School of the Arts, Conservatory of Theatre Arts & Film and creates exciting and bold interpretations of classic and contemporary plays while bringing the next generation of actors, designers and technicians to the stage for the first time.

Actor Christopher McCann of New York, the director of Marisol, has appeared on several episodes of Law and Order, the ESPN mini series The Bronx is Burning, and HBO’s The Path to Paradise.  He won an Obie and Drama Desk nomination for The Lights at Lincoln Center. He has appeared in numerous plays including Impossible Marriage with Holly Hunter, Tony Kushner’s A Dybbuk, and several productions at the New York Shakespeare Festival to name a few.

David Bassuk of Ridgefield, CT, director of Book of Days, is Dean Emeritus and  Professor of Acting at the Purchase College Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film. He has directed many plays including the world premier musical Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, Chiam Potok’s The Chosen with Rob Morrow and George Hearn, and American Camera produced at Lincoln Center.

Bassuk has also directed and produced the first plays written by Nadine Gordimer, Richard Sennett and Chaim Potok.  He has been a playwright for new adaptations of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and Jack Kerouac’s Visions of Cody.

He was a member of the artistic staffs of Lincoln Center Theatre and American Place Theater.  Bassuk was also artistic Director at Novel Stages & the Arcadia Shakespeare Festival in Philadelphia.  He was co-artistic director of ARK Theatre in Los Angeles.  A Purchase graduate, he has a master’s degree in Directing from Southern Methodist University.
