Puccini’s La Bohème Comes To Fox Lane High School

Westchester Opera NewsMt. Kisco, NY – Soon, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical RENT will close but the irresistible romance of la vie bohème continues as The Eastern Festival Opera Company announces its spring production of Giacomo Puccini’s popular La Bohème.  The E.F.O.C.’s third annual spring offering in Westchester, La Bohème, will be performed at Fox Lane High School in Mount Kisco, NY for four performances only.

The opera will be presented with full orchestra under the baton of Artistic Director Zachary Israel Nobile Kampler. Director Jonathan Serrano returns with his inimitable theatrical staging, which brings urgency and relevance to the opera.

In the hundred or so years since Giacomo Puccini penned this perennial favorite, his soaring; unforgettable melodies still give voice to a collective need to savor the present moment even in its fragility.  While the image of the creative person living below the poverty line may have changed, the transcendent nature of loyal friendship has not. One year can still become transformative for friends, especially in Bohemia, a nation bordered by Need, Misery, Illusion, and Death.  Anyone who experienced RENT will have a special view of the influence that La Bohème had on Jonathan Larson’s heartfelt adaptation.

The Eastern Festival Opera Company is a subsidiary EFSO, which Mr. Kampler founded in 2003.  Since its 2006 launch, The E.F.O.C. has had unqualified success, with past productions including La Traviata in Bedford, NY and Le Nozze di Figaro in Pelham, NY.  Directed by Mr. Serrano, each cast included both established opera veterans and rising stars.

The E.F.O.C. is creating a solid, lasting presence, providing daring main stage productions to an enthusiastic local southern Westchester audience base.  Mr. Serrano, his sister Rosemarie Serrano, and Mr. Kampler, who run The E.F.O.C., are proud Westchester natives themselves. Much like the well-known Amato Opera in Manhattan, the company is a family affair.  While Mr. Serrano directs, Rosemarie Serrano is Producer and leading soprano.  Mr. Serrano’s daughters Devon and Dominique and his wife Kayla all contribute to the effort, as do Rosemarie Serrano’s son Marc and daughter Heather.  And the effort is succeeding.

The production will be presented in Italian with simultaneous English subtitles at Fox Lane High School in Mount Kisco, NY.
