Purchase NY - Piano virtuoso Radu Lupu, a “gentle genius of the piano” (The New Yorker) and one of the most important musicians of his generation, headlines the GREAT PERFORMANCES BROUGHT TO YOU BY MASTERCARD® series at The Performing Arts Center Purchase College on Saturday, Jan. 12th at 8 p.m.
Since winning the 1969 Leeds Piano Competition, the Romanian-born musician has stunned audiences and critics throughout the musical capitals and major festivals of Europe and the United States. He has appeared many times with the Berlin Philharmonic since his debut with that orchestra at the l978 Salzburg Festival under Herbert von Karajan. He is widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert.
In a paean to Lupu’s artistry, The New Yorker’s critic Alex Ross wrote, “It wasn’t so much a performance as a glimpse of a perfect world. No pianist gets a lovelier tone out of the instrument.” And The Seattle Times added, “Anyone who has not seen Lupu play, must....Sonically, he is an absolute wonder. “
The GREAT PERFORMANCES BROUGHT TO YOU BY MASTERCARD® Series concludes with pianist virtuosos Emanuel Ax on Sunday, Feb. 17th at 3 p.m.
