Pelham Art Center was conceived in 1969 as the Pelham Art Happening, a two-day, town-wide art and music festival planned by local artists and area residents and funded by the Junior League of Pelham. In May 1970, the first Pelham Art Happening was presented at Pelham Memorial High School. Events included visual arts exhibits, musical performances, and art workshops. The Art Happening was held until 1976, when the Art Center began to operate year round and rented a storefront on the main street of Pelham, a small village in southern Westchester County. Since 1985, it has owned and occupied its present location, a renovated 5,000 square-foot building that was originally a CitiServices gas and auto service station.
A vibrant and active regional focal point for the arts, Pelham Art Center is widely recognized for its many free public programs, a relevant and varied exhibition program, a large selection of affordable classes for all ages and all abilities and art outreach programs serving people who experience barriers to participating in art activities. More than 15,000 people are served each year by the programs.
