PMT Productions Presents Urinetown

Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPleasantville, NY - PMT Productions (Pleasantville Music Theater), one of Westchester’s oldest and most respected community theater organizations, will present a fully staged production of “Urinetown: The Musical”, from June 12th through June 21st at the Richard G. Rosenthal JCC, 600 Bear Ridge Road, Pleasantville, New York.

Performances are slated for June 12, 13, 19 & 20th at 8 pm, June 14th at 7 pm, and June 21st at 3 pm. Tickets may be obtained by calling (914) 879-0310.

Amidst the many revivals of classic Broadway musicals that are performed regionally, Urinetown stands out as a recent phenomenon. Originally debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival, Urinetown was opened on Broadway in September of 2001. With music by Mark Hollmann, book by Greg Kotis and lyrics by Hollmann and Kotis, Urinetown won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score.

The play is set in a futuristic society, in which a twenty-year draught has caused a severe water shortage, making private toilets unthinkable. To control water consumption, people have to pay a mega corporation called “Urine Good Company” or UGC to use the amenities. There are harsh laws ensuring that people must pay to urinate, and if the laws are broken, guilty parties are sent to a penal colony called “Urinetown” from which they never return.

“In the tradition of the best satire, Urinetown is a play that makes you laugh… and think about larger issues…it’s goofy and smart,” says Ray Arrucci, who is producing the PMT version of the play. “It’s a play of great energy and a memorable and varied score. Everything is lampooned from corporate greed, to beuracracy, and even small town politics.”

The choice to present this particular play at this time adds to its relevance. Audiences are sure to relate the present day incidences of corporate greed in the news to the antics of the fictionalized tycoons in “Urinetown.”

This spring’s PMT Production of “Urinetown” is directed by Jason Summers, an accomplished director, actor and choreographer whose work as a director has been seen off-Broadway in New York and in countless regional and college theatres throughout the country. New York City-based Musical Director John Coffey also boasts national credits, including the touring company of the Full Monty.

As with PMT’s fall 2008 production of The Baker’s Wife, Urinetown will be presented at the JCC on Bear Ridge Road in Pleasantville, allowing audiences an intimate experience with “no bad seat in the house.”

Adding to the intimacy will be the production’s beautiful sets, Broadway quality lighting, and live music courtesy of an eight piece orchestra under Music Director John Coffey’s baton.

“We understand that the challenging economy has made it even more difficult for Westchester residents to go to a Broadway show…so we’ve worked very hard over the last few months. to produce a Broadway quality show here at an affordable price. Audiences won’t be disappointed.
