The New York Times has praised Stephen Robinson for his “effortless virtuosity” and his seven CDs have been critically-acclaimed by Classical Guitar magazine, Guitar Review and American Record Guide, among others. The late renowned guitarist Andrés Segovia described him as a “magnificent guitarist, one of the most brilliant guitarists of our times.”
Dr. Robinson is a Port Chester High School graduate and a Professor of Music at Stetson University in Florida, where he is the founding director of the Guitar Program. He began his guitar studies with Bruce Holzman at Florida State University and continued graduate studies at Yale School of Music. He received Florida State’s first Doctor of Music in Guitar Performance.
Stephen Robinson tours extensively as a recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral soloist. Of a recent performance, Soundboard said, “Anyone who has not heard Robinson play is missing one of America’s great guitarists, a performer of brilliance, elegance and lyricism.” He has appeared as a guest soloist with orchestras including the Boston Pops Orchestras and the Cincinnati Symphony and performs recitals and master classes at leading musical institutions and festivals worldwide.
Dr. Robinson has received top prizes at five major international music competitions, including the XXIII Concours International de Guitare in Paris and the VI Concurso Internacional de Guitarra in Venezeula.
His most recent recording is entitled Découpage, and features special guest Boyd Jones, harpsichord and organ. In works spanning nearly three centuries, Robinson showcases the talents of new composers and giants of the old guard including Máximo Diego Pujol, J.S. Bach, Pierre Tremblay and Luigi Boccherini, among others. He exposes the multi-faceted and cosmopolitan layers of the expanding guitar repertoire, combining recent jewels with timeless standards.
The Port Chester Council for the Arts (PCCFA) was founded in 1981 and has mounted over 100 theatre productions which have featured over 2,000 adults and children. The PCCFA also runs educational arts-based programs including the Connections after-school program and an artist-in-residence program for grades K-5 in conjunction with the Port Chester elementary schools. On April 16, 2009, it will present the second annual National Arts in the School Day, a program founded by the PCCFA to give thousands of children the opportunity to learn about and be personally inspired by the creative arts—at school.
