Mt. Kisco, NY - When this summer’s “Screenings under the Stars” Free Outdoor Movies series kicks off in July at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, the series will offer two family fare blockbuster films on a 65-foot screen, and culminate with a special presentation of a popular horror film for older teens and adults.
The series kicks off on Thursday, July 10, with a showing of last year’s summer hit Bee Movie (PG, 2007). Then, on Thursday, August 21, the family favorite Shrek the Third (PG, 2007) will be screened at sundown, followed by a special presentation of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show (R, 1975) at 12 midnight the same day.
“Now in its fifth year, the Screenings under the Stars outdoor movie series has become a summer tradition here in Westchester and is always popular with families of all ages,” County Executive Andy Spano said. “This summer, we decided to ‘mix it up a little’ by presenting something for an older audience, too. Watching this humorous horror film outdoors, at midnight and in the dark, should be a lot of fun for this group on a late-summer evening.”
According to Spano, the “Screenings under the Stars” free outdoor movie series is presented by Westchester County and the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville. The event is sponsored by Fujifilm USA, Westchester Magazine, The Journal News LoHud.com, radio stations 100.7 WHUD and 107.1 The Peak, FunTime Amusements and Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc.
The animated feature Bee Movie combines the writing and voice-over talents of the popular comedian Jerry Seinfeld in this tale of Barry B. Benson, a bee who has just graduated from college and is disillusioned at his lone career choice: making honey. On a special trip outside the hive, Barry's life is saved by Vanessa, a florist in New York City who is portrayed by Academy Award-winning actress Renee Zellweger. As their relationship blossoms, he discovers that humans actually eat honey, and subsequently decides to file a class-action lawsuit against them. Hilarity ensues as the two are joined by a host of characters that are portrayed by the voices of actors Matthew Broderick, Chris Rock, Oprah Winfrey and a host of other popular guest artists.
Prior to the start of the movie, there’ll be plenty of entertainment with a deejay beginning at 6 p.m. Bee Movie and Shrek the Third begin at sundown.
Gates open at 11 p.m. for The Rocky Horror Picture Show; the movie begins at 12 midnight. Please note: this film is rated R for audiences age 17 and up; teens who attend must show a photo ID with proof of age or must be accompanied by an adult.
Admission and parking are free. Moviegoers should bring blankets, folding chairs and a picnic to enjoy on Kensico’s wide lawn. Refreshments will also be for sale during the Bee Movie and Shrek the Third only. In the event of rain, the movie will be canceled.
Kensico Dam Plaza is located at the north end of the Bronx River Parkway in Valhalla and can be reached via Route 22 or the Taconic State Parkway.
