Westchester Entertainment NewsPurchase, NY - Jazz guitarist Doug Munro, Mamaroneck, NY, jazz professor at Purchase College, has just released a new CD entitled Big Boss Bossa Nova 2.0, a follow-up to 2004’s critically-acclaimed Big Boss Bossa Nova.

Describing this CD as “more of a bare bones session,” this sparkling, live to CD recording features Munro at his best in an intimate trio setting, with intricate rhythmic riffs and intriguing improvisations that are a hallmark of his playing.

Featuring some original tunes, the CD also features covers of Chick Corea’s “Spain,” Thelonious Monk and Denzil Best’s “Bemsha Swing,” Sonny Rollins’ “Blue Seven,” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Little Sunflower,” among others.

Joining Munro on this recording is his working group comprised of bassist Michael Goetz and drummers Jay Devlin and Jason Anderson.

On February 1, Munro and his trio will be performing songs off the new CD at the Watercolor Café in Larchmont.

Munro created the Jazz Studies program at the Purchase College School of the Arts, Conservatory of Music and served as its director from 1993-2002. He continues to teach in the program as Director Emeritus.

Since 1987, Munro has released 10 albums as a leader and has appeared on close to 30 recording as a sideman, producer and arranger. He has worked with a diverse array of artists including Dr. John, Michael Brecker and Dr. Lonnie Smith.

His original published compositions total over 75, with 200 recorded arrangements by the finest players on the scene today.

He has received two Grammy nominations and two NAIRD awards. Amazon.com picked Boogaloo to Beck, on which he performed, arranged and co-produced, as one of its Top Ten Jazz CD’s of 2003. He also did orchestration work on the Oscar-winning documentary When We Were Kings.
