Pleasantville NY - The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) Board of Directors has elected David Swope to a three-year term as the board’s chairman.
The Board elected Swope at its March 19 meeting after Art Samberg announced that he would be stepping down from the post. Samberg, of Ossining, who served as Chairman since 2004, will remain on the board. In grateful appreciation for his leadership during a period of substantial growth, the Board voted unanimously to designate Art Samberg as Chairman Emeritus.
A founding board member, David Swope, also of Ossining, has served as a director since 2000. In addition to serving on the Nominating Committee, David Swope has been Chairman of the Building Committee since 2003. In this role, Swope oversaw the construction of the Media Arts Lab, which was a major component of the Campaign for 21st Century Education. The Lab opened its doors to students of all ages on January 31, 2009.
“I am honored to take on the role of Chairman at such a significant time in the life of the Jacob Burns Film Center. I am also extremely fortunate to follow in the footsteps of Art Samberg, who guided us through the successful completion of the Campaign for 21st Century Education,” said Swope.
Swope is President and Founder of Club Fit, a leading Westchester fitness and recreation organization. He is a graduate of Harvard University and holds a law degree from Columbia University. He served in the Peace Corps in Bombay and sits on the Board of Directors of Westchester Community College, Ossining Children’s Center, and Teatown Lake Reservation.
“While we are no longer focused on bricks and mortar, we will continue to build programs for many years to come, “said Art Samberg. “David is the ideal person to help us increase our capacity to develop and further our film, education, and outreach programs,” Art Samberg said.
“David has been a tireless advocate for the Film Center and an important leader in so much of the board's varied work," said JBFC Founder and Executive Director, Steve Apkon. "Bringing that leadership as Chairman of the Board, David will help us build on our recent accomplishments and further the distinctive and powerful mission of the Jacob Burns Film Center."
