Music Conservatory Summer Programs For Children

Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsWhite Plains, NY - This summer the Music Conservatory of Westchester, a non-profit community school of the arts, is offering a variety of programs for children of all ages.

Students are invited to explore their interests in the arts and develop new skills in a supportive, relaxed, and fun environment. Highlights include the Summer Music and Arts Program, Summer Theatre Workshop, Suzuki Strings Summer Institute, and Summer Vocal Performance Academy.

Summer Music and Arts Program
The Summer Music and Arts program offers group instrumental lessons, arts and crafts, singing, dance/movement, acting, improvisation, and educational games for ages 6-11. The four week program, which runs June 29 – July 24, meets Monday through Friday. Half-day (9AM-12:30PM), full-day (9AM-3:30PM), and extended-day (9AM-5:30PM) options are offered. Tuition ranges from $575-1,110; a discount for White Plains residents is available.

Summer Theatre Workshop
An exciting opportunity awaits aspiring young theatre artists ages 7-16 with the Conservatory’s Summer Theatre Workshop. Participants explore creativity, the ensemble spirit, and their individual creative talents, while learning theatre skills from professional directors and teaching artists. There are two three-week sessions (9:30AM-3:30PM), June 29 – July 17 and July 20 – August 7, each with a final musical performance. Session I concludes with a performance of Guys and Dolls. Session II participants will present Disney’s High School Musical. Tuition is $975 for a single session or $1795 for both sessions; a discount for White Plains residents is available.

Suzuki Strings Summer Institute
The Suzuki Strings Summer Institute is an intensive program for young violin and cello students ages 4-12. The program, which runs August 24-28 from 9:30AM-4:30PM, includes lessons, group class, Music Skills, yoga, performance class, and recitals. Beginners are welcome; students under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. All Institute faculty are certified Suzuki instructors with years of teaching experience. Tuition is based on lesson type and ranges from $350-525.

Summer Vocal Performance Academy
For students interested in honing their vocal skills, the Summer Vocal Performance Academy teaches healthy vocal technique and builds a foundation in a range of vocal styles including classical, opera, musical theatre, jazz, and gospel. The curriculum includes private voice lessons (ages 16+), ensemble, sight-singing and dictation, vocal technique, acting for singers, jazz and gospel workshops, master classes, vocal health, and performance opportunities. The Academy takes place August 3-14 from 9:30AM-4:30PM. Tuition is $1,175 (ages 16+); $875 for the apprentice program (ages 14-15).

“Summer programs at the Conservatory open up a world of possibilities for students of all ages and abilities to explore their musical and theatrical interests,” says Jean Newton, Dean of Students and Faculty at the Music Conservatory of Westchester. “Our Suzuki Strings Institute, for example, is customized based on the child’s level of experience. Beginners receive a thorough introduction to the Suzuki method and the basics of violin-playing. Those more experienced further develop their technical ability, musicianship, ensemble playing, and performance skills in a nurturing, enjoyable atmosphere.”
