Purchase, NY - The Mingus Big Band -- "the best jazz orchestra in the world” (The Washington Post) -- celebrates the music of the composer and bassist Charles Mingus at a concert on Saturday, Apr. 12th at The Performing Arts Center Purchase College.
Tickets to the 8 p.m. jazz concert are $45, $35 and $25. A free prelude lecture about the evening’s performance is at 7 p.m.
The 14-member Big Band features a rotating cast of notable New York musicians chosen and directed by Mingus' widow, Sue. The band "succeeds so triumphantly where others [repertory bands] have failed," wrote a reviewer for The London Times. The Los Angeles Times agreed, praisint the band’s "spirited blend of the lush harmonies and boisterous blues sections, interwoven ensemble passages and sudden tempo shifts that made the late bassist Charles Mingus one of the most challenging and celebrated artists in jazz."
Throughout his career, Mingus created a new role for the double bass in jazz music while composing ambitious, cross-genre pieces. He created a body of work that was a touchstone for genres such as free and avant-garde jazz, modern composition and hip-hop.
The performance by the Mingus Big Band is part of this season’s Africa and the African Diaspora Series, a cross-campus programming initiative at Purchase College that explores traditions, revolutions and innovations within this rich culture.
