Master Class On Vocal Auditions

Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsYonkers, NY - Be Mused Productions brings future stars one step closer to Broadway on June 13, with is two 3 hour master classes on vocal auditioning for musical theatre.

Combining a professional voice lesson with Broadway audition technique, each vocal participant will work for 30 minutes with Broadway musical director, Eric Johnston and professional singer/director, Kim Breden.  This master class will focus on audition etiquette, vocal technique, musical theatre performance and repertoire.

Saturday, June 13
Session One – 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Session Two – 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Vocal Participant - $50 Fee
General Audience - $20 Fee

Each vocal participant is asked to prepare 2 contrasting songs, a ballad and an up-tempo.  Participants will have the benefit of working with a live accompanist, as in a professional audition.  Participants are encouraged to audio-record or video tape the master class, as well as take notes during each session.  There are limited performance times available, and the afternoon master class will open only once the morning sessions are full.  The master class is not an audition for any specific production, but an opportunity for training in an audition experience.  There is great benefit in attending the class and observing other performers, even if you choose not to sing.

Eric K. Johnston has been active in musical theatre for over 35 years.  Recent work includes music directing Les Misérables and Hello, Dolly! at ArkansasRepertory Theatre in Little Rock, assisting on The Producers and The Light in the Piazza with Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City and on Les Misérables at North Shore Music Theatre near Boston.  Other music direction includes the Off-Broadway Shanghai Lil's, summer stock productions of Annie, Damn Yankees, The Sound of Music and Phantom (with Kim Breden as Carlotta), and numerous shows around the New York City area.  Eric is also a private vocal coach whose clients include a number of Broadway performers, including one Tony Award winner.  He will soon be heading out to California for his sixth summer as rehearsal and pit pianist for the Sacramento Music Circus, where he has played for 20 productions, including Beauty & the Beast, Sweeney Todd, and Smokey Joe's Café.  Although working in musical theatre is Eric's greatest passion (as well has his full-time career), he holds a BS in Computer Science and French from Bethany College in Bethany, WV .

Kim Breden is the Chief Executive Muse of Be Mused Productions, which specializes in educational entertainment.  Be Mused Children’s Theatre Company offers musical theatre workshops for children and families, preschool through teen.  In addition to directing and producing these workshops, Kim provides music programs and concerts, celebrating Broadway’s greatest hits, for museums, libraries and nearly 50 Senior Residences in NY, NJ, CT and Florida.  She has recently released a children’s CD, “Picture This!, Imagine That!”, featuring all original songs.  As a volunteer with the Rehabilitation through the Arts Program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, Kim musical directed their 18th production, West Side Story.

Kim's singing career has taken her around the globe, performing in Hamburg , Germany in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera as well as Valencienne in The Merry Widow and Irene Molloy in Hello Dolly! in Leipzig and Dresden .  She has also appeared as Maria in The Sound of Music and Guenevere in Camelot in Bloemfontein and Durban , South Africa .  During the National Tour of Annie, Kim portrayed Grace Farrell.  She has been seen in the role of Anna in The King & I at the Westchester Broadway Theatre.  Her favorite leading roles include Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, and Agnes in I Do!, I Do!, (Curtain Call , CT), Carlotta in Yeston/Kopitt's Phantom (Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company, NH), Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady (Eastern Slope Playhouse, NH) and Marian the Librarian in The Music Man (Yorktown Stage , NY).  She has appeared as a concert guest artist with the Charleston Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, The Brevard Music Festival, Dallas Perspectives Concert Series and the Caramoor Music Festival.  Kim holds two Bachelors degrees, one in Voice, the other in Music Education, from the University of South Carolina , and two Masters Degrees, one in Vocal Performance, the other in Music Therapy, from SMU in Dallas.
