White Plains, NY - Need a second dose of Mother’s Day? Well, you can do all again this weekend, but this time you can plan it your way. Take the family to Mamapalooza 2008, a festival to celebrate women, mothers and families on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
There’s plenty of fun activities and entertainment for dad and the kids, but their something special for mom too - workshops especially geared to women.
Mamapalooza 2008 is presented by Westchester County Parks and the County’s Office for Women to benefit the Motherhood Foundation, an organization that creates and presents visual, literary and performing arts events for mothers. Sponsors are 100.7 WHUD Radio, The Journal News/LoHudMoms.com, the Women’s Research and Education Fund, Westchester Arts Council, the United States Postal Service, JPMorgan Chase, White Plains Hospital Center, Coppertone, Be Fit Westchester, and Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc.
The following is a list of workshops for women:
Strut Your Stuff – How to Start Your Own Business (offered in English & Spanish): Learn how to turn your idea or hobby into a profit-making small business. Hosted by The Women’s Enterprise Development Center. 10 – 11:30 am
Living Loud – Sexual Health and Well-being: A frank and friendly conversation on sexuality from girlhood to womanhood. Panel presentation followed by questions and answers. Noon to 1:30 p.m.
Power Babe – Money Management: Become a smart money earner, saver, spender, and planner. Led by Cindy Hounsell, President, The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement in Washington, D.C. and Dennis McDermott, Vice President, JPMorgan Chase Community Development Group in Westchester. Noon to 1:30
Teen Self-Esteem – Exploring Confidence: Girls ages 13 to 18 will use art and discussion to develop a definition of a confident woman. 2 – 3:30 pm
I Ate THAT? – Understanding Food Labels: Become a savvy food shopper by knowing how to figure out what ingredients are good and not-so-good for you. 2 – 3 pm
On-line Shopping –How to Use eBay: Learn how to buy and sell from your computer using the trading service eBay. Presented by the US Postal Service. 3:30 – 5 pm
Get the Real Dirt on Clean – Cleaning Products and Toxins: Become enlightened to the negative effect cleaning products can have on your home, health and the environment. 4 – 5 pm
In addition to workshops there will be health and wellness information and screenings including breast cancer, blood pressure, HIV, diabetes and posture screening; reproductive healthcare for teens and young adults, nutrition information, yoga classes and massage. There will also be a Women’s Marketplace with crafts, gifts, clothing and jewelry offered by 30 women-owned businesses.
Dad can take the kids to the jumper castle, and from 11a.m. to 1 pm there will be musical acts and entertainment for kids -- even a diaper relay race. The Be Fit Mobile staff will give kids inspiration to get off the couch and get moving. Kids can stay engaged all day in arts and crafts, chalk drawing on the plaza, and, of course, the playground for some traditional swinging and sliding fun.
Kids will have their own workshops too from 2 to 5 p.m. they can create a Flipbook Fantasy or learn the Art of Origami. Music will begin on the Mainstage at 1 p.m. and include everything from electric violin to folk and jazz to hip-hop will be happening until 5 pm.
