MCW Offers Children Introduction To Musical Instruments

Westchester Entertainment NewsWhite Plains, NY - If you enjoy live music and theatre events, you won’t want to miss the Music Conservatory of Westchester’s (MCW) upcoming Kids on Central concerts.

Kids on Central offers children a fun, informative, and hands-on introduction to the musical instrument families. This year’s series kicks-off with “Piano, Percussion, and Harp,” featuring original music written and performed by composition students, on Saturday, January 24 at 2 p.m. in the Conservatory’s Helen Demetrios and Michael Stadther Recital Hall.

Each Kids on Central concert features instrument demonstrations by a member of the Conservatory’s distinguished faculty, as well as a musical story-telling activity with music performed by Conservatory students.  Prior to each concert, starting at 1:00 p.m., children also have the opportunity to see, touch, and try out the different instruments. Story selection and musical arrangements for the series were done by Alyssa Reit, Conservatory harp faculty member, who will also conduct the concerts. Upcoming performances include:

Saturday, January 24
11:00 a.m.
Musical Theatre Workshop student performance (free)

2:00 p.m. (hands-on instrument display at 1:00 p.m.)
Kids on Central: Piano, Percussion, and Harp
Featuring original music written and performed by composition students of Conservatory faculty member Cindi Hsu (pianist and award-winning composer).  Story: "Stone Soup," narrated by Conservatory faculty member Johanna Rose (singer, actress, and founding member of Anonymous Four).

2:00 p.m. (hands-on instrument display at 1:00 p.m.)
Kids on Central: The Woodwind and Brass Families
Featuring musical performances by students in the Conservatory’s Chamber Orchestra. Story: "The Brementown Musicians."

Saturday, February 28
2:00 p.m. (hands-on instrument display at 1:00 p.m.)
Kids on Central: The String Family
Featuring musical performances by students in the Conservatory’s Chamber Orchestra and Suzuki Strings program. Story: "The 12 Dancing Christmases," narrated by Conservatory faculty member Johanna Rose (singer, actress, and founding member of Anonymous Four).   Pre-concert hands-on string instrument display provided by Atelier of Greenwich, CT.

Kids on Central Tickets are $15; $10 for students and senior citizens; and free for Conservatory students and faculty. For tickets or more information, call the Box Office at (914) 761-3900 x155.  All tickets are held at the door and may be retrieved one half-hour before a concert.  Reservations are recommended.

In addition to its Kids on Central concerts, the Music Conservatory of Westchester also has two upcoming Students on Central performances on January 24, 2009. A Musical Theatre Workshop performance will take place at 11 a.m., followed by the Conservatory’s Ensembles Concert at 3:30 p.m. Students on Central highlights the hard work and dedication of the organization’s many talented students. Both performances are free and open to the public; no tickets required.
