Purchase, NY - Outer space is the star of Sun Rings, a celestial multimedia production created by the Kronos Quartet, with help from NASA. The show, featuring magnificent soundscapes and galvanizing visuals, will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24th at The Performing Arts Center Purchase College.
Written by longtime Kronos collaborator Terry Riley, Sun Rings is an evening-length work in 10 movements. The production, commissioned for Kronos by NASA and others, features a choir along with sounds and images from space.
Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times, observed, “Space sounds swirl in the air; galaxies carpet the walls and ceiling; and Riley’s generous melodies flow through Kronos’ four string instruments. The audience sat in spellbound silence the way spectators do at a space launch.” Alan Rich of LA Weekly called Sun Rings “a masterpiece.” He wrote, “Riley’s music is many kinds of gorgeous—the enchanting tripping of his folk-dance stuff and a melodic manner rich, lyrical and breath-stopping I haven’t heard before.”
And Melinda Bargreen of the Seattle Times called the show “thought-provoking, ear-opening and just plain beautiful.” She wrote, “…Surrounded by an array of twinkling lights, with an ever-changing display on the video screen, Kronos carved an expert path through Riley’s wide-ranging score—from tango and pop to serene chord clusters.”
Tickets are $45, $35 and $25. A free prelude lecture about the performance begins at 2 p.m.
