Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPleasantville, NY – The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC), a cultural arts institution, announces that registration for two adult education classes is now underway.

The classes will be Film Noir, which will focus on the genre, and Classic Hollywood Directors II, which will expand upon the class JBFC currently offers called Classic Hollywood. Both classes will be taught by JBFC educator Dr. Vicente Rodriguez Ortega, who teaches at NYU and CUNY and has published several essays in Reverse Shot and Senses of Cinema.

Classic Hollywood Directors II will follow the work of three different influential directors, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg. “They represent three alternative approaches to filmmaking in one of the most groundbreaking periods of American film history—namely, the late 1960s and 1970s—and their career paths have evolved following diverse trends in the industry,” said JBFC educator Dr. Vicente Rodriguez Ortega. Some films that will be discussed in the class are Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Jaws, Schlinder’s List, The Long Goodbye, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Film Noir will show the distinctly American genre that influenced film worldwide through its signature sharp angles and black-and-white photography, and will including excerpts from John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon, Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, and John Dahl’s The Last Seduction.

Film Noir will begin on Sunday, April 20 and run on consecutive Sundays through May 11, starting at 10 am. Classic Hollywood Directors II will begin on Tuesday April 22, and continue on May 13, and June 10, at 7:30 pm. For those who are interested in registering for either class please visit our website at www.burnsfilmcenter.org (click on Education/Adult Education) or call Membership at (914) 773- 7663, ext 6.

In addition to these adult education classes, JBFC currently offers a variety of education programs in film and visual literacy. Other programs include See•Hear•Feel•Film for third grade, Animation: Minds in Motion! for forth grade, Cinemania and Classroom to Screening Room for Middle School, Unscripted and Classroom to Screening Room for High School, and World Crew for college students. When JBFC opens its new Media and Education Center later this year, the educational opportunities offered will grow and expand to further the JBFC curriculum.

The Jacob Burns Film Center is a not-for-profit cultural arts organization in Pleasantville, New York dedicated to: presenting the best of independent, documentary and world cinema; promoting visual literacy and making film a vibrant part of the community.  The programs are inspired by the power of film to challenge, educate and inspire; to transport us to worlds beyond our own; and to create community through shared dialogue and cultural experience.  Since the opening in June 2001, over 1,000,000 people have seen over 3,000 films from more than 40 countries.  From students learning critical viewing skills and discussing films with the filmmakers, to creating their own animated shorts, the Film Center uses the visual imagery of film as a catalyst for learning.  To learn more about the Jacob Burns Film Center, visit www.burnsfilmcenter.org.
