Valhalla, NY - Ragamala Music and Dance Theater will showcase the beauty, elegance, poetry, and driving rhythmic complexities of Bharatanatyam, the ancient classical dance of Southern India, at Westchester Community College (WCC) on Saturday, February 14.
The dance/music event will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the Academic Arts Theatre. After the show, there will be a lecture/discussion and reception with the performers.
The presentation of Ragamala Music and Dance Theatre in Sva is made possible by the MetLife Community Connections Fund of the National Dance project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts. Major support for the National Dance Project is also provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from the Ford Foundation and the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Also, this tour of Ragamala Music and Dance Theater is made possible by a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.
Sva (Vital Force) is an explosive new work that continues the company’s signature style of bringing Indian dance into conversation with diverse influences from around the world. The title work begins as six dancers and three drummers converge on stage to embody the rhythm and flow of life and the primordial sound that unites all of creation—the sacred and the profane, the animate and inanimate. Wadaiko Ensemble Tokara’s large, sweeping movements, thundering force, and stunning physicality brilliantly compliment Ragamala’s fluid precision, punctuated footwork, and sustained gestures. Inspired by the ancient philosophy that the universe is perpetually forming, dissolving, and reforming, Sva is a visceral evening of dance that should not be missed.
Tickets are $20 (general admission) $17 (student/seniors) and $12 (children under 13). For information, call 914-606-6262.
