Westchester Entertainment NewsScarsdale, NY - Hoff-Barthelson Music School is pleased to present faculty pianist Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng on its HB Artist Series. She will be joined by guest cellist Katherine Cherbas on Friday, April 4 at 8 pm at the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church, Popham and Autenrieth Roads, Scarsdale, New York.

The evening’s program will be a romantic one, as it features music of Mendelssohn and Debussy. Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words in D Major, Opus 109 and his Sonata No. 2 in D Major for cello and piano will be heard, along with Debussy’s The Girl With The Flaxen Hair and Sonate for Cello and Piano.

Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng has performed extensively in the U.S., France, Italy, Japan, and Taiwan to great critical acclaim.  Her solo and collaborative engagements have brought her to many of the world’s major music centers, including Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York, Dame Myra Hess Series of Chicago, Opera City Hall of Tokyo, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Kravis Center in Florida, and National Concert Hall of Taipei.  She has distinguished herself in several international competitions, including first prizes in the IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Italy, Kingsville International Competition, and Association of Pianists and Piano Teachers of America International Piano Competition.  She was the recipient of Prix-Ville de Fontainebleau in France, which was personally presented to her by Philippe Entremont.  Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Martin Bernheimer wrote that she plays “eloquently and elegantly…(with) passion and introspection…sensitivity and a finely honed sense of style” and the Courier-Post hailed her performance with the Haddonfield Symphony as “fearless, with a graceful ease that belied the technical difficulties in Prokofiev.”

Recent appearances include recitals at the Coastal Carolina University, Humboldt State University, New York University, University of Arkansas, University of Illinois, SUNY Potsdam, and Youngstown State University, as well as solo engagements with the SUNY Stony Brook Symphony under Leon Fleisher and Brampton Symphony Orchestra in Toronto.  She has been featured on National Public Radio, WFMT in Chicago, Chicago Loop Cable Channel 25, Radio Video Mediterraneo in Italy, Living & Travel Section of msnbc.com, and Nippon Television in Japan.

Cellist Katherine Cherbas has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout the U.S. and has received particular acclaim for her performances of contemporary music, including the recently released world-premiere recording of Milton Babbitt’s String Quartet No. 6 (Tzadik).  She is also an accomplished continuo player and was a founding member of the Neue Bach Band, an eleven-member ensemble devoted to the performance of vocal and instrumental chamber music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries.  Ms. Cherbas, whose sound has been described as “fresh and full” (Strings), has performed at all of New York’s major halls, and has been heard on WNYC and BBC3 radio and the NBC, PBS, and Bravo television networks.  She can also frequently be heard in the cello section of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and Broadway shows including Wicked and Phantom of the Opera.

In addition to her activities as a performer, Ms. Cherbas is a Teaching Artist in the New York City public schools.

The Hoff-Barthelson Music School, one of Westchester County’s most cherished and active cultural resources, has achieved national recognition as a premier community music school for its unsurpassed leadership in education, performance and outreach for more than half a century.

Tickets to the concert are $14 general, $13 seniors, $12 Friends of Hoff-Barthelson, and free for students. Information and reservations: 914-723-1169.
