Hoff Barthelson Presents Richard Carrick

Westchester Entertainment NewsScarsdale, NY - The Hoff-Barthelson Music School is pleased to present pianist and contemporary composer Richard Carrick on its HB Artist Recital Series, Sunday, January 6, 4 pm, at the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church, Popham and Autenrieth Roads, Scarsdale.

He will be joined on the program by guest artist, David Shively, guitar, with whom he performs as the Either/Or Duo.

The program will include George Friedrich Haas’ Ein Schattenspiel (for piano and live electronics); Mr. Carrick’s Pianos (for piano and tape) and Helmut Lachenmann’s composition for two guitars, Salüt fur Caudwell.

Richard Carrick is a composer and pianist who writes music for soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestra, film, and concert music with video. His music has been performed at the Konzerthaus (Vienna),  Cosmicomics, his "operatically ambitious and scintillating" (Kyle Gann, Village Voice) multimedia piece with an "organic, restless, unruly score" (Anthony Tommasini, New York Times) is based on stories by Italo Calvino and was premiered by the Sequitur Ensemble of New York City in Merkin Hall.

He has written for the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam, The Nouvel Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble-On-Line of Vienna, the Arditti Quartet, the Cabrini Trio, Patricia Kopatchinskaija, Petra Ackermann, and has been performed by the ISCM World Music Days 2004 in Switzerland, The Lange Nacht in Vienna’s Konzerthaus, le Nouvel Ensemble Modern, The Auros Group for New Music, IRCAM’s Stage d’éte, Royaumont Voix Nouvelles, and more.

As pianist he has performed on the Green Umbrella Series in Los Angeles, and soloist at the MATA Festival in New York, Karnatic Lab in Amsterdam, and at the Banff Centre, Canada as well as regular appearances in New York. He recently performed on marimba with Kyandu Muziki in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and his film score for Solidarity received the Gold Medal of Excellence at the Park City Film Festival 2007.

Carrick founded Either/Or “A new and first-rate new-music ensemble” (The New York Times) in 2004, which actively performs in major venues throughout New York.  He studied at Columbia University (BA), the Koninklijk Conservatorium of The Hague, and with Brian Ferneyhough at the University of California-San Diego (MA, PhD) before moving back to Manhattan.  Carrick held the title of Lecturer of Music at UC-San Diego and is presently on the Composition Faculty at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School, where he is Director of Music Technology, and teaches with the New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers Program.
