Scarsdale, NY - On Saturday, November 15th, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Greenburgh Nature Center will host a hands-on family workshop entitled “Nature in Clay,” led by artist Leigh Taylor Mickelson.
The workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for families to have fun together while experiencing the ability of clay to transform art, space and life.
The workshop, recommended for ages 6 and older, will allow participants to explore how to use natural forms as a means of personal expression. Using simple hand-building clay techniques, participants will create abstract forms and consider how these forms can take on a life of their own to tell a story or evoke an emotion. Each participant is asked to bring to the workshop one object from nature that has personal meaning.
Leigh Taylor Mickelson is the program director of the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, NY. She uses forms from nature, particularly ones found in plant life, as inspiration for her work. Her exhibit, “Nature in Clay: Botanical Attraction” is on display at the Greenburgh Nature Center through Sunday, November 30th. The exhibit is part of the county-wide celebration entitled “All Fired Up! A Celebration of Clay Arts in Westchester,” and it juxtaposes one abstract organic form against another in horizontal and vertical formats.
The size of the workshop is limited to 20 participants, so pre-registration and pre-payment are required. The cost of the workshop is $6/person for members and $10/person for non-members. To register, call the Nature Center at (914) 723-3470.
