Hastings-on-Hudson, NY - Armed with a deep catalog of sweetly rustic, warmly melancholic folk-pop, Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers will open the 2008-2009 season at Common Ground Coffeehouse on Saturday, September 27th at 8 pm.
Common Ground is located at the First Unitarian Society of Westchester at 25 Old Jackson Avenue, Hastings-on-Hudson NY.
The group, which had previously shared the stage with such indie music stars as Feist and Andrew Bird, was recently hand-picked by former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant to open a concert on Plant's current tour with bluegrass star Alison Krauss.
Great Lake Swimmers is led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker, and includes Erik Arnesen (banjo, electric guitar) and Colin Huebert (drums, percussion, glockenspiel, timpani). In 2007, the group released its third record Ongiara, which Mojo magazine called "Ambient Zen Americana." National Public Radio has declared Dekker's songs as "haunting, haunted music, made to accompany haunting, haunted storytelling."
Great Lake Swimmers have been compared to Nick Drake, Iron and Wine, and Neil Young. They were awarded the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Galaxie Rising Star Award in March 2005 and were voted "Favourite Folk/Roots Artist "at the 2004 Canadian Independent Music Awards.
Tickets are $15 for individuals and $10 for seniors and students, aged 12 and above, and can be purchased in advance through Common Ground's website at http://commongroundfusw.com/. Children under 12 are free. For directions and more information, please call 914-693-1065.
