Rye, NY - Participants are invited to help to make border tiles for the Chinese Dragon mural project that is being produced by the artist Sarah Coble for the Rye Town Park.
This free program will run Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 10am-12pm at Rye Town Park - under the Pavilion, rain or shine. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Ms. Coble will work with children and adults to collect shells and press designs into wet clay tiles.
Participation is on a “first come, first served” basis. About 15 people will be able to work on tile projects at a time.
The Chinese Dragon project evokes the folktale about a young boy who outwits a sea dragon in order to save his town. The folktale tile depicting the Chinese dragon will be playful and vibrant.
The dragon also makes reference to the historic Dragon Coaster of nearby Playland Amusement Park.
Sarah Coble studied art history at Vassar College and received an M.F.A. at Columbia University. She studied ceramics at Kansas City Art Institute and Alfred University. Ms. Coble currently teaches sculpture and ceramics at the Hackley School. She currently has an exhibit of ceramic sculptures on display by the pond at Rye Town Park.
This mural project and workshop is made possible, in part, by ArtsWestchester’s Municipal Challenge Grant, funded by Verizon. Partnership support is being provided by the Rye Town Park Commission and the Clay Art Center of Port Chester.
Rye Town Park is located on 95 Dearborn Avenue (off Forest Avenue), in the City of Rye, NY.
