Rye, NY - Three of the Rye institutions participating in this fall’s Westchester County-wide “All Fired Up” Clay Art Project are staging a special “moveable feast” of opening receptions on Sunday, October 5th.
The free, public receptions at Rye Town Park, the Rye Historical Society, and the Rye Arts Center have been designed to overlap so that people can segue from one to the next throughout the afternoon. Light refreshments will be served at each venue.
The afternoon begins at Rye Town Park’s naturalized Duck Pond. On display will be an installation by Canadian sculptors Sara Mills and Michel Viala. The exhibit is entitled “Strange Attractors: Water Games and Archway.” The artists have created clusters of colorful floating stoneware spheres that will be anchored in the Pond, along with a ceramic arch located at the Pond’s viewing terrace. The opening reception at the Pond will run from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In case of inclement weather the reception will be held at the Park’s pavilion near Dearborn Ave.
Next, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., comes the reception for “Saltfired Wares: 1700s to 2008” at the Rye Historical Society. The exhibit juxtaposes works from the Society’s Square House Museum collection with works by contemporary potter Bruce Dehnert. Salt firing is a 14th century technique, which results in unusual blushes of color and a unique, stylish surface.
The afternoon concludes with a 4:00 to 6:00 reception and panel discussion at the Rye Arts Center for the exhibit “Atmospheric Pots and the Penland Connection.” Curated by North Carolina artists Suze Lindsay and Gertrude Graham Smith, the exhibit features over 195 works, highlighting different firing effects using wood, salt or soda. The 39 invited artists are connected with the famous Penland School of Craft in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
About All Fired Up:
From October 3 – November 30, 2008, sixty-eight venues throughout Westchester County will participate in All Fired Up! A Celebration of Clay in Westchester. This consortium project, led by the Westchester Arts Council, the Clay Art Center, and a steering committee of eight cultural institutions, will encompass museums, multi-art centers, library- and college-based galleries and alternative sites hosting parallel exhibitions of regional, national, and international works of art that explore the breadth and depth of ceramic expression- from folk arts to fine arts, historical to contemporary.
