Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsMt. Kisco, NY - Hold onto your picnic blankets as the grounds of Lasdon Park resound to a “Festival of Brass and Percussion: Fanfare and Superman,” performed by the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, Saturday night, July 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Somers.

The concert is part of Lasdon’s “Midsummer Night Music” series.

Under the direction of Maestro Petko Dimitrov, the orchestra will perform a salute to the brass and percussion section, with works that highlight these two dramatic aspects of the orchestra. The evening kicks off with “Fanfare for the Common Man” by renowned American composer Aaron Copland, followed by Joan Tower’s Copland-inspired “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman,” and a rousing rendition of John Williams’ theme from the Superman film series. The program continues with Three Mexican Songs (traditional; Chavez), followed by Bach’s Cantata No. 119, “Preise, Jerusalem, den Herrn” in a special arrangement for percussion. French composer Paul Dukas’ “Fanfare from La Peri” impressionistic ballet follows, with several selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story bringing the evening’s program to a dramatic climax.

Tickets are priced at $15 for adults, $10 for children 6 – 12 and seniors. Admission is free for children under age 6. All proceeds from sales of tickets benefit the Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc. for the purpose of constructing a Glass House Conservatory – a large greenhouse – at Lasdon Arboretum.
The gates open at 5 p.m. for picnicking; the music begins at 6 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the gate on the evening of the performance. In case of rain, concerts will be cancelled.

“Midsummer Night Music” concludes on Saturday, August 1, with “Light Classics” featuring pieces written by a variety of composers ranging from Brahms and Rossini to Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra.

The series is presented by the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra and Westchester County Parks. It is sponsored by Diversified Investment Advisors, Putnam Hospital Center, Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc., and Friends of Lasdon Park and Arboretum.
