White Plains, NY - The award-winning Westchester Choral Society will present an all-Brahms concert on Sunday, May 18, at 3:00 PM in the Rye Presbyterian Church, 882 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY.
The performance, which will be conducted by WCS Music Director Frank Nemhauser, wil include the Liebeslieder Waltzes, Four Songs for Women's Chorus, and Deutsche Volkslieder. David Baranowski, a resident of Larchmont, will be the accompanist.
Tickets for the May 18 concert are $25, $10 for students with ID. A gala "meet the artists" reception will follow the concert. For further information about upcoming events or to schedule a singer-friendly audition, contact WCS Administrator Katie Goulart at 914-761-3900 ext. 103 or go to www.westchesterchoralsociety.org.
Asked about his inspiration for programming the May 18 concert, WCS Music Director Frank Nemhauser said, "Brahms is one of my favorite composers. I thought I’d like to share another side of Brahms --- the non Requiem side. The Four Songs (op. 17) gives us a chance to feature the women of the choir. The Liebeslieder Waltzes are a great example of salon music at its best. Springtime and Brahms, a perfect match."
Founded by Sarah Stewart Bowne in 1942 to perform Bach’s B minor Mass with 15 singers, WCS invites singers in all voice sections to join the chorus for the 2008-09 season. The Choral Society's music director, Frank Nemhauser, will conduct auditions for prospective members at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, 216 Central Avenue in White Plains (near the County Center), where the chorus is in residence, in September 2008. Rehearsals are held at the Conservatory on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00 PM. Free parking is available, and the Conservatory is fully accessible.
Nemhauser is Music Director of the Berkshire Choral Festival and Associate Dean at Mannes College of Music. Born in New York City, Nemhauser grew up in Westchester. Regarding the audition process, Nemhauser says, "I am looking for quality of voice and the ability to read music/learn music. I would like to stress that the audition procedure will be short and I am extremely kind during auditions."
