Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsWhite Plains, NY - Stephen K. Dishart, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ArtsWestchester, has announced that long-time Westchester resident Eugene M. Grant will receive the prestigious “Spirit of the Arts” award at the “Arts Dazzle” Gala on Saturday, November 21, 2009, to be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown.

Mr. Grant, a leading real estate developer and investor, will be recognized for his many decades of work as a dedicated arts patron of Westchester County’s leading cultural institutions. Along with his wife, Emily, Mr. Grant is a founding member and longtime supporter of the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck. The Grants are active supporters of ArtsWestchester, of which Mrs. Grant serves on the Board of Trustees, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the Purchase College Foundation and several other cultural organizations. Mr. Grant is also the Chairman Emeritus of the Westchester Holocaust Commission.

Mr. Grant will be presented with the “Spirit of the Arts” award by New York State Assemblyman Adam Bradley.

“This is the inaugural year for the “Spirit of the Arts” award,” explains ArtsWestchester Executive Director Janet T. Langsam. “The award seeks to recognize an individual who embodies the values reflected in the arts such as inspiration, vision, and hard work. We can think of no better honoree than Eugene Grant, who, along with his wife Emily, maintains his support of the local arts community…whether the economy is strong or weak. But beyond a willingness to share their resources, the Grants are actively involved in the causes they support, crafting policy, building consensus, and always pointing the way forward.”

ArtsWestchester’s annual gala is a highlight of the Westchester social season and has repeatedly been voted “Best Fundraising Gala” by Westchester Magazine.  The organization raises a significant portion of its operational budget at the event, using those funds to support its mission of “bringing the arts to more people.” ArtsWestchester distributes grants to arts organizations and artists, sends artists into schools in all areas of the county, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and numerous community service venues, and works to market the local non-profit arts community.

More than 600 people will attend “Arts Dazzle” on November 21st in support of the arts in Westchester. The evening, chaired by Robert Wiener and hosted by his fellow ArtsWestchester Trustees, will kick-off with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and a brief program slated for 8 pm.  Later, guests will dance the night away to a live band. ArtsWestchester is your connection to the arts. Founded in 1965, it is the largest, private, not-for-profit arts council in New York State; its mission is to provide leadership, vision, and support, to ensure the availability, accessibility, and diversity of the arts.  ArtsWestchester provides programs and services that enrich Westchester: our grants help fund concerts, exhibitions and plays; we bring artists into schools and community centers; we advocate for the arts and build audiences through our marketing initiatives. In 1998, ArtsWestchester purchased the nine-story neo-classical bank building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue which has since been transformed into the Arts Exchange, a multi-use resource for artists, cultural organizations, and the community.
