Purchase, NY - Angélique Kidjo, whose meteoric rise on the international music scene has garnered exuberant praise from critics and audiences worldwide, brings her dynamic show to The Performing Arts Center Purchase College on Friday, April 4th at 8 p.m.
The Grammy-nominated, much-celebrated singer, composer, and performer began in the Beninese port village of Cotonou, where she launched her career at the age of six. Her striking voice, stage presence and her fluency in multiple cultures and languages won respect from her peers and expanded her following across national borders. Her music blends elements of funk, salsa, jazz, rumba, soul and makossa.
Kidjo has traveled far and mesmerized audiences on countless stages, speaking out on behalf of the children in her capacity as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. With her new CD DJIN DJIN (pronounced “gin gin”), she shares her music with a cast of all-star guests, including Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, and Branford Marsalis.
The performance by Angélique Kidjo is part of this season’s Africa and the African Diaspora Series, a cross-campus programming initiative at Purchase College that explores traditions, revolutions and innovations within this rich culture.
