White Plains, NY - In an effort to highlight issues affecting women in incarceration, and programs and services facilitating their return to the community, several community groups have joined forces to present “Women in the Corrections System: Incarceration and Return to the Community,” to be held Thursday, October 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), 845 North Broadway, White Plains.
A panel including formerly incarcerated women, representatives from the Women in Prison Project of the Correctional Association of NY and staff of the Westchester County Office for Women, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and the WJCS Fresh Start Mentoring Program will offer a profile of the state’s incarcerated women with emphasis on Westchester County. Panelists will highlight the problems experienced by women in the correctional system with emphasis on the post-incarceration period. They also will identify successful and model programs and legislative initiatives as well as gaps in services. Resource materials, including reports, service guides and fact sheets, will be available. Representatives of local programs and services will be present for networking.
Cosponsored by the Women’s Issues Committee of the Westchester Division of the National Association of Social Workers, the Westchester County Office for Women and Westchester Jewish Community Services, the conference is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For further information or to register, contact Judy Gordon of the NASW Women’s Issues Committee at 914-654 5392 or Lenore Rosenbaum, WJCS Program Director, at 914-761-0600 x308.
