Westchester Community NewsMt. Kisco, NY - The breathtaking pyramid, the fabled chair balance, and other daredevil feats will be a treat for all when the World Famous Wallendas take to the highwire at Playland Park in Rye this summer for daily shows beginning June 23.

The most famous family in circus history is headed by Rick Wallenda, the eldest grandson of the troupe’s founders Karl and Helen. Rick’s experience includes a stunning “skywalk” over the Columbus Zoo’s tiger pen and other memorable performances. He has entertained on three continents during his 40-year career, and has kept the troupe in the spotlight with ever-changing routines and re-creations of timeless favorites.

The newest member of the Wallendas, 10-year-old Bri, joined the troupe in the summer of 2008 and quickly learned the most gravity-defying, spectacular Wallenda routines including the chair balance.

Luis Obando, a veteran of the Castro high-wire act, joins the Wallendas for the 2009 season at Playland. Obando brings his experience, talent, finesse and agility to the high-wire act and contributes headstands and other difficult tricks.

The World Famous Wallendas will perform daily in the amusement park at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.; evening performances are at 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. All performances take place in the central mall near the Music Tower Theater.

Playland Fun Bands admission wristbands, which offer unlimited rides are $25 for Westchester residents and $30 for non-residents. Twilight Fun Bands, sold after 6 p.m., are $20 for Westchester residents and $25 for non-residents. Junior Fund Bands, which allow unlimited free access to select park rides for children under 36 inches tall when accompanied by an adult with a Fun Band, are free with the purchase of any adult Fun Band (maximum two Junior Fun bands per adult Fun Band). Non-riders entering the amusement section of the park to walk, watch the park’s entertainment or chaperone others pay $3 (Westchester residents) and $5 (non-residents). If they later choose to go on rides, holders of non-rider wristbands can upgrade to a Fun Band during their visit. In addition, all Fun Card points from the prior season can be used to purchase a Fun Band or non-rider band, or can be used to go on rides. Fun Cards points can be purchased in the park for at $1 a point.

Westchester-resident Fun Band purchases also cover the fees for miniature golf and Playland Beach and Pool. Schedules for these amenities vary.

Acceptable proof of Westchester County residency is a Westchester County Park Pass, a valid New York State driver’s license or NYS-issued non-driver I.D., a Westchester County school photo I.D., a report card or a credit card with ZIP code verification.

There is no charge for going to the boardwalk (including Big Band concerts and boardwalk arcades and shops), the pier, the ¾-mile Seaside Walk, museum, Fountain Plaza and its adjacent food court, fireworks viewing, boathouse or Read Sanctuary.

Parking is $4 weekdays and $5 weekends and holidays.
