White Plains, NY - Following its amazing success with The Trove children’s library, White Plains Public Library is taking the next step and creating distinctive space and services for teens.
The White Plains Library Foundation has agreed to raise 100% of the funding needed.
The plan is to redo space on the Library’s first floor as a visually distinct, welcoming area for teens with its own name (“The Edge”), theme and décor. Display shelving, panels and furnishings will be used to set the space apart as a teen-friendly seating, study and viewing/listening area. At the same time the Library will further develop its programs and online presence for this age group. In the process of rearranging things, the Library will also improve accommodations for local history materials and regular adult seating. “Teens need an appropriate place to spend time downtown,” says Library Director Sandy Miranda. “As part of our mission to serve the community, we are committed to serving teens and their needs. ” Local teens and parents offered input for the new area during two advisory group sessions at the Library in early June. The Library will continue to seek teen input during all stages of planning.
"Encouraging positive behaviors in the youth of the City of White Plains through positive programming has always been of great importance to me and my administration,” says White Plains Mayor Joseph M. Delfino. “It is important for our youth to have a place that they can spend their time in that is safe and fun. I look forward to seeing The Edge come to fruition."
The project budget (and fund raising goal) is $250,000 and the Foundation hopes to reach that goal and complete the project by fall 2009. The focal point of its fund raising effort is its 4th Annual Treasures Gala on Saturday, October 25, 2008. This fund raising event features a calypso supper, silent auction, treasure hunt and festivities. For information about attending the gala or sponsorship opportunities please call 914-422-1406.
The White Plains Library Foundation was incorporated in 1995 to raise funds to help meet the long-range goals of the White Plains Public Library. From 1997-2001 the Foundation conducted its first fund raising effort, a Centennial Campaign, that raised $1 million to enhance programs and collections, establish an endowment, and seed a capital project to renovate and expand the children’s library. In 2004-2005 The Campaign for the Children’s Library raised an additional $750,000 and The Trove opened to community acclaim. More information about White Plains Library Foundation and The White Plains Public Library can be found at www.whiteplainslibrary.org. The Library is located at 100 Martine Avenue, White Plains.
