White Plains, NY - Cherry blossom time is cause for celebration of spring in Japan – and in White Plains, too. For the ninth year in a row, White Plains will see, taste and hear a piece of Japan at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in White Plains, New York.
This year’s event will take place Sunday, May 4 from noon to 5 p.m. at Turnure Park where 35 blooming cherry trees were planted one year ago for the occasion. Turnure Park is located one block from North Broadway between Lake Street and Main Street in downtown White Plains. The festival is free and open to the public.
The popular event, which drew more than 6,000 Westchester residents last year, will feature traditional Japanese arts – classical music, dance, singing and martial arts – performed at the park’s expanded arena. Under the cherry trees, there will be children’s workshops -- picture story-telling, rice cake game, dream dragon workshop and Japanese chess – as well as kimono demonstrations, origami and calligraphy workshops and tea ceremonies. There will also be free lessons in Japanese folk dance. Traditional Japanese food and other snacks will be available for sale.
Festival coordinators are the Japan Education Center, NiJi No Kai, and the City of White Plains Recreation and Parks Department. Japanese food is provided by Daido and Fujinoya.
