Upcoming Family Programs At Hilltop Hanover Farm

Westchester Community NewsWhite Plains, NY - Participate in wine tastings or a tomato tasting, learn how to can vegetables and enjoy dinner and a movie with your family.  All this and more during August at Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown.

Basics of Wine Tasting – Wednesday, August 6, 13, 27 and September 10 – 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Join Tom DeChiaro, owner of The Winery at St. George, for wine tastings and appreciation.  Sessions will include discussions of wine history and foods that complement wine.  20 participants maximum; must be 21 or older; by reservation only; $5 fee per session or $15 for 4 sessions.  To register, call 245-2520.

Dinner & Movie – Friday, August 1, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Bring a picnic dinner, buy fresh vegetables and watch Natural Connections, a film that makes a compelling scientific and ethical case for maintaining biodiversity.

Pesto 101 – Saturday, August 2, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Learn how to make delicious varieties of pesto.  8 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Evening Farm Tour – Thursday, August 7, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Bring a blanket, picnic dinner and tour the farm with Farmer Mary Ellen as the sun sets on the hillside.

Butterfly Gardening – Saturday, August 9, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension demonstrate how to choose plants that will attract butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Freezing & Storing Vegetables – Saturday, August 9, 12 noon – 3 p.m.
Pat Brosnan demonstrates how to freeze and store freshly picked fruits and vegetables so you can enjoy them throughout the year.  8 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Grilling Vegetables 101 – Friday, August 15, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Learn how to grill an assortment of vegetables to serve as side dishes or a main course.  8 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Traditional English Dancing – Friday, August 22, 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon
The American Travelling Morrice will perform a lively English country tradition, the morris dance.  Morris dancers wear bells on their legs, dance to a musical accompaniment of the accordion, fiddle or ancient pipe and are directed by a Fool, whose antics amuse onlookers and harass the dancers.   

Pick Your Own Vegetables – Saturday, August 23, 9 a.m. – 12 noon
Pick your own fresh produce in the fields and pay at the farm stand.  All produce is grown using organic methods with no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.

Tomato Tasting – Sunday, August 24, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Taste a variety of tomatoes grown at the farm and vote for your favorite.

Canning 101 – Sunday, August 24, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Learn the art of canning vegetables.  8 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Hilltop Hanover Farm, a 180-acre former dairy farm, was purchased by the county in 2003 for agricultural preservation, drinking water protection and the promotion of environmental stewardship through demonstration projects and sustainability programs.  Admission is free and the farm is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. 

Hilltop Hanover Farm is located at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights.  It can be reached via the Taconic State Parkway.  Take the Millwood/Route 100 exit to Route 100 north.  Turn left onto Route 118.  Make a right onto Hanover Street.  The farm is on the left.
