Upcoming Family Programs At Hilltop Hanover Farm

Westchester Community NewsWhite Plains, NY - Learn how to make your own jams and jellies, pick your own fresh organic vegetables, enjoy dinner and a movie with your family and have the soil from your backyard or garden tested this month at Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown.

Evening Farm Tour – Friday, July 11, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Bring a blanket, picnic dinner and tour the farm with Farmer Mary Ellen as the sun sets on the hillside.

Pick Your Own Vegetables – Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Pick your own fresh produce in the fields and pay at the farm stand.  All produce is grown using organic methods with no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. 

Making Jams and Jellies – Saturday, July 12, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Join experienced jelly and jam maker Pat Brosnan as she demonstrates how to make delicious jams and jellies.  12 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Full Moon Farm Tour – Friday, July 18, 8 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Tour the farm with Farmer Mary Ellen and learn some of the folklore and science associated with planting by the cycles of the moon.

Soil Diagnostics – Saturday, July 19, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
The most important thing you can do for your garden is have healthy soil.  Bring a soil sample from your lawn or garden for testing, diagnosis and recommendations.  $10 fee. 

Making Gelato – Saturday, July 19, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Learn how to make healthy gelato with fresh ingredients.  Registration required; $10 fee.

Dinner & Movie – Friday, July 25, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Bring a picnic dinner, buy fresh vegetables and watch “My Father’s Garden,” a film that explores sustainable agriculture and the contrast between chemical and organic farming.

Canning & Pickling 101 – Saturday, July 26, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Seasoned canner Pat Brosnan demonstrates the art of canning and pickling vegetables.  12 participants maximum; by reservation only; $10 fee.  To register, call 245-2520.

Hilltop Hanover Farm, a 180-acre former dairy farm, was purchased by the county in 2003 for agricultural preservation, drinking water protection and the promotion of environmental stewardship through demonstration projects and sustainability programs.  Admission is free and the farm is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.

Hilltop Hanover Farm is located at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights.  It can be reached via the Taconic State Parkway.  Take the Millwood/Route 100 exit to Route 100 north.  Turn left onto Route 118.  Make a right onto Hanover Street.  The farm is on the left.
