Yorktown Heights, NY - Spring is just around the corner and it’s never too early to get your garden going. During the month of March, Hilltop Hanover Farm will host several programs to help you prepare for the vegetable-growing season.
Cold Frame Planting – Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Barn F.
Learn how to build a cold frame so you can get an early start to the vegetable-growing season. Cold frames act as miniature greenhouses, warming the soil and allowing plants to survive the late winter and early spring. Farmer Mary Ellen Sheehan will show you how to start seeds for transplant and what vegetables you can start planting now to grow hardy greens in your cold frame. 15 participants maximum; registration required. Friday Night at the Movies – “American Farm” – Friday, March 20, 7 p.m. in Barn F ,
“American Farm” documents the struggles of the Ames family, dairy farmers in upstate New York who held on to their farm for generations. Now, none of the younger family members are willing to stay on the farm that has been the family’s livelihood for over a century. Doors open at 6 p.m. for those who wish to bring a picnic dinner. Volunteer Orientation –Saturday, March 21, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. in Barn F.
Monthly workshops will be held for people interested in volunteering at the farm. Volunteers will learn more about the farm operation and where your talents are most needed. A short slide show will be followed by a tour and discussion. Bring your enthusiasm and energy, learn about farming and help contribute to maintaining the farm as an environmental resource center. Spring Equinox Woodlands Hike – Saturday, March 21, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Join farm staff to welcome spring and hike the farm’s beautiful woodland trails. Meet new friends as you explore the 3.5 miles of woodland trails at Hilltop Hanover Farm. The hike is free and will be canceled if there is rain. No reservations are required. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Park in gravel lots; no parking is allowed on the main road. Composting with Worms – Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Barn F.
It may be hard to believe, but worms create high quality compost in a short amount of time. Learn how to build a worm bin, set your worms up in a comfortable environment and how to care for them. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to keep waste out of our landfills and put healthy compost into your garden. 15 participants maximum; registration required. To register, call (914) 962-2368.
Hilltop Hanover Farm, a 180-acre former dairy farm, was purchased by the county in 2003 for agricultural preservation, drinking water protection and the promotion of environmental stewardship through demonstration projects and sustainability programs. Admission is free. Winter hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekends open for special events. Trails are year-round from dawn to dusk.
The Farm is located at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights. It can be reached via the Taconic State Parkway. Take the Millwood/Route 100 exit to Route 100 north. Turn left onto Route 118. Make a right onto Hanover Street. The farm is on the left.
