Mt. Vernon, NY - The City of Mount Vernon Youth Bureau in collaboration with the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Zeta Nu Omega Chapter and the Department of Recreation will host the “United Nations Youth Globalization Project” on November 11, 2008.
The goal of the project is to introduce and further educate 50 high school young women (Juniors and Seniors) from Westchester County on the history and merits of the United Nations (hereinafter UN) in today’s society; create an interactive experience to personalize the UN organization for each student; assist in identifying student opportunities for long term involvement in UN sponsored initiatives; establish an on-going dialogue with student participants on world issues which include but are not limited to disparities in education, employment, hunger and poverty, health, environment, juvenile delinquency and HIV/AIDS.
By collaborating with the oldest and historical African American Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., and NGO Representative to the United Nations (previous Superintendent of the Mount Vernon City School District), Mrs. Brenda Smith, the Youth Bureau will afford an opportunity for Mount Vernon students, principals, teachers, parents and residents to tour the UN Complex and observe UN exhibits.
Upon arrival at the UN, Mrs. Smith has arranged for a briefing from Mr. Ahmad Kamal, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the UN and now UN Official from UNITAR (UN Training and Research), for all participants. The participants will also dine in the exclusive and world renowned dining hall of the UN delegates while addressing the needs of today’s youths.
