Tarrytown, NY - Nnamdi Anuforo (of Sleepy Hollow) and Diana Pena (of Sleepy Hollow), members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester’s Tarrytown Center, have each been awarded a $2,000 college scholarship from Charles Schwab Foundation. Anuforo and Pena were two of 20 teens chosen nationwide to receive the scholarship.
Anuforo and Pena were selected as scholarship recipients based on their successful completion of the Money Matters: Make it CountSM program and how they chose to incorporate it into their lives to achieve their short- and long-term goals. Money Matters was created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Charles Schwab Foundation to promote financial literacy among teens and is targeted especially to youth from underserved communities. Anuforo and Pena, both 18, will graduate this June. Anuforo plans to attend SUNY Albany and pursue a career in finance. Pena will attend Columbia University or SUNY Stony Brook and is interested in a medical career.
“Through the Money Matters program and these scholarships, we are aiming to help today’s teens become financially fit adults who have the knowledge and skills to succeed as adults,” said Carrie Schwab Pomerantz, president of Charles Schwab Foundation. “In fact, we’ve already seen that the program is working; teens who experience Money Matters demonstrate increased awareness and understanding of the importance of making good financial choices.”
“Since implementing the Money Matters program, our Club members are becoming skilled in a number of areas including creating a budget, using a checking account, saving for college and the basics of managing debt,” said Brian Skanes, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester. “We are pleased they are learning how to handle their money responsibly and to see that this program can positively change behavior.”
The Money Matters program is available to all Boys & Girls Clubs serving teens and helps members learn the basics of money management, including budgeting, wise use of credit, saving and investing. Resources include a Teen Personal Finance Guide and the Money Matters Web site – a secure site for teens. Money Matters also features the Schwab Employee Volunteer Program, which encourages Schwab employees to share their financial expertise with teen Club members and their families. To date, the Money Matters program has grown to serve over 70,000 teens and provide over 97 college scholarships.
