Thanksgiving Food Explored At Philipse Manor Hall
Posted by Westchester.com
Wednesday, 18 November 2009

Westchester Community NewsYonkers, NY - The Philipse Family never celebrated an American Thanksgiving, but at 12 p.m. on November 21st, 2009, Philipse Manor Hall will hold a hands-on, multicultural celebration of food ways in honor of the holiday.

During Food in the Time of Thanksgiving, our activity will be three-fold. From 12 – 1 p.m., we will learn the historical preparation of several foods, accompanied by a historical narrative that will help elucidate ingredients, cooking factors and cultural beliefs behind certain dishes. From 1 – 2 p.m., guests will join the staff for a jaunty food and thanksgiving themed house tour. From 2 – 3 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to sample historical autumnal/winter foods that might have crossed the plate of previous residents of the Hudson Valley. Plan to discuss the Dutch, Native Americans, the English, Africans and the places in which they overlapped gastronomically!

For further information, please call 914-965-4027 or visit our event information website, philipsemanorhall.blogspot.com. This program is $5/person, and children under age 12 are $3. If you would like to bring a canned food item for donation, you will receive a reduced adult admission of $3. RSVP is appreciated.

Philipse Manor Hall, a high-style Georgian manor house, was the seat of a 52,000-acre estate and home to three generations of the Lords of Philipsburg Manor. Built between c. 1680 and 1755, it is the site around which the City of Yonkers grew and developed. Philipse Manor Hall is located at 29 Warburton Avenue, at Dock Street, in Yonkers, and parking is available on site. The historic site is one of six state historic sites and 13 parks administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Taconic Region: www.nysparks.com.
