New York, NY - Scientists have stumbled upon the secret to leading a longer and happier life: volunteering. A growing body of research shows that the impact of volunteering goes way beyond that warm fuzzy feeling everyone talks about.
Studies show that people who volunteer have lower mortality and depression rates. There is even evidence that volunteering can help ease the effects of chronic illness in a way that modern medicine can't.
In The Salvation Army Greater New York Division, volunteering not only has great personal benefits, it also makes a huge difference. Annually 22,233 volunteers (more than ten times the number of employees) help keep our 140 community and social services going strong.
We know some might be intimidated by volunteering or not know the first step to take—which is why in honor of National Salvation Army week we bring you:
Emergency Disaster Services
* Join The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team. Help EDS support victims and first responders confronted with large and small scale calamities through services like providing hot meals and spiritual counseling.
Details: Approved volunteers are assigned to a Salvation Army Community Center that provides emergency services. After training they will able to help respond to disasters as their schedules allow.
Peekskill Corps Community Center (117 Nelson Avenue)
* Assist in the soup kitchen. Work includes cooking, serving and clean up.
Details: Sat. - Sun. 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
Yonkers Community Center (110 New Main Street)
* Assist with youth with homework in the after-school program
Details: Mon. - Fri. 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tarrytown Community Center (115 Wildley St.)
* Organize and help with food pantry service
Details: Emergency pantry assistance Mon. - Fri. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
* Help out at summer camp, assisting with scheduled activities
Details: Mon. - Fri. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m
