Rye, NY - “One Hundred Years of Outdoor Family Fun” is the theme of Rye Town Park’s special day on Saturday, July 18th.
Co-sponsored by the Friends of Rye Town Park, the event will feature story-telling, games, karaoke and refreshments. Admission and parking are free.
Throughout the afternoon there will be an exhibit of photographs of people enjoying Rye Town Park since it first opened in the summer of 1909.
The area which is now Rye Town Park was previously the location of numerous summer rental bungalows, on property owned by wealthy Rye resident Augustus Halsted.
All the festivities will occur on the park’s “great lawn” area, located between the middle and north beach access gates.
Activities will begin at 4:00 p.m. with welcoming remarks by members of the Rye Town Park Commission and other officials.
Port Chester-based story teller Lou Del Bianco will then engage “children of all ages” in a fun-filled program of stories.
Music for listening, dancing and karaoke fun will be provided by DJ Justine Faith. Ms. Faith is known by many area residents, as she performs regularly at “Buffalo Wild Wings” in Port Chester.
Old fashioned games for children will be organized and led by volunteers from the Friends of Rye Town Park and their “recruits.”
Refreshments, including hot dogs, juice, water, and “Dixie cup” ice cream will be on sale, with all items being offered at the low price of $.50 each.
Persons interested in learning more about the birth of Rye Town Park should visit the Rye Historical Society’s Knapp House, located at the intersection of Milton Rd and Rye Beach Avenue. The exhibit opened on June 20th and will run through the fall.
The rain date for the event will be Sunday, July 19th at the same time.
